Originally from Canada, Dr. Afton Halloran considers herself a global citizen. For the past 12 years, she has dedicated her career to understanding and improving food systems all over the world.
Dr. Halloran is an External Consultant to the Nordic Food Policy Lab of the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Editor-in-Chief of the Solutions Menu: A Nordic Guide to Sustainable Food Policy, a publication that is now in the hands of many policy-makers around the world. Dr. Halloran also works an independent consultant advising intergovernmental organizations, research institutions, companies and NGOs on issues related to the future of food, the social impacts of food production, food culture/gastronomy, food policy and sustainable diets. She is also passionate about moderating events and facilitating system mapping workshops.
Dr. Halloran has previously worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, where the co-authored the most downloaded publication in the history of the organization, Edible insects: future prospects for food and feed security. She has also worked for Sustainable Cities International in Tanzania where, together with many other dedicated people, she was responsible for successfully facilitating the incorporation of urban agriculture as a land use into the Dar es Salaam Master Plan. Dr. Halloran has previously worked as a researcher for the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems.
Dr. Halloran holds a PhD in International and Paediatric Nutrition with a specialization in Sustainable Food Systems and a MSc in Agricultural Development from the University of Copenhagen with a specialization in urban agriculture.
Since 2018, Dr. Halloran been a member of the World Restaurant Awards judging panel and a member of the board of directors of FunkisFabriken Centre for Sustainability Research. She also one of the Agribusiness Academyâ€™s Experts.
