In January 2017, Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj was designated Minister of Digital Economy and Society, by the Royal Thai Government. The Prime Minister wished to dedicate Dr. Pichet's leadership to the digital economy as an important driver of innovation, competitiveness, and opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Prior to this appointment, Dr.Durongkaveroj was Minister of Science and Technology (August 2014-December 2016). Prior to this, he has a long and outstanding career in the field of public policy. He has contributed to the design and formulation of various national and international policies including science, technology and innovation (STI), ICT, e-commerce, and higher education.
Dr. Pichet received the 2016 Startup Nations Awards for National Policy Leadership for his achievements as the Secretary General of the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office, a newly established office chaired by the Prime Minister. Dr.Durongkaveroj was instrumental in the design of the first National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy and Plan (2012-2021). The Plan has a wide coverage not only in the development of STI but more importantly the deployment of STI for national competitiveness and sustainable development. Dr.Durongkaveroj has also contributed to many national schemes in human resource development. He was the key author of the National Higher Education Long-Range Plan and science and technology human capital development in the context of green innovation.
Dr.Durongkaveroj held many executive management positions including Chairman of the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand, Executive Director of Knowledge Network Institute of Thailand, Director of Policy Innovation Center of King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi, Chairman of e-ASEAN Working Group and Director of the National Information Technology Committee Secretariat.
He has been active in international STI communities including regional cooperation such as ASEAN, APEC, OECD, bilateral cooperation and international organizations such as WHO, UNESCO and World Bank.
Dr.Durongkaveroj received his Ph.D. in Public Policy and Management from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA and M.Eng.Sc. in Applied Solar Energy from Trinity University, USA and B.E. in Electrical Engineering from University of New South Wales, Australia.
